Salt is basically used only for fish who'll need brackish water conditions during the adult stage. That applies particularly to scats and figure-8 puffers.
It can be used for emergencies like ich outbreak and some fish who benefit from salt(although not necessarily) like mollies.
Your lfs is giving you advice to put salt in a tank with different fish(whether tolerant or intolerant of salt) which is wrong.
I have to add that some plants will not tolerate salt(which the site has also mentioned-but in different term :mrgreen: ).
