I have 2 on my 75g cichlid tank along with a FX5, definitely worth it, easy to clean and a good filter.

It's a nice filter. I was a little disappointed with the volume of media it held considering it's GPH and tank size rating, but all in all a good buy. However, I would not but another. The sunsun 302 has a little lower flow rating, but holds twice as much media. 3 Stage External Canister Filter 265 GPH Fresh Salt 100 Gal Aquarium Free Media | eBay
I've bought a few of these from this seller.

Shipping from your friend could be costly, putting the filter in the $80+ range. Still, not a bad price I guess.

He said he would ship for +15 and include a freshwater API liquid test kit that he barely used.

My tank is also not fully stocked yet. I do expect to get 2-3 more species. Atleast 6 cory cats, still looking for 6 striped kuhlis for my lone striped kuhli and possibly a school of tetras or barbs. They're still on the "maybe list".

Jaysee, what brand is that filter? I've been through my fair share of "no brands" and they've been very much 1 star products.

I have a 7.5 year old XP3 that I love. It has yet to have any part wear out or be replaced. I use it on my 55 gallon planted tank and it does very well by itself. I've never really seen an issue with the amount of media. Half of mine is just stuffed with quilt batting then it has the original coarse sponges along with some ceramic noodles and other random sponges.

Have a XP2 on one of my cichlid tanks, it's worth the money and runs like a champ.

That's because you have an XP3. I was referring to the XP2. I have no issues whatsoever with my XP3s.

The filter I linked to is a sunsun. I have 4 of them. Everyone I know that's gotten them is happy with them, but I obviously don't know EVERYONE.

I have the XP3, recently actually, so not a lot of time with it. It is far better than than the 'no name' filter it replaced though. No leaks and such, the only thing I don't like is how much louder it is over the cheap-o one, but it has quite a bit higher flow.

Not the same as the XP2 of course, but they're all built in the same fashion. The XP2 just has 2 baskets instead of 3. I run planted tanks, so in all honesty I could fit all my media into just the two baskets if I had to, and that's with my 125g tank. That's because all I use is pre-filter media, sponges, and pads. I don't use carbon or any of those other 'chemical' style medias.
