A canister is the right answer for a 46 gallon. Any HOB big enough to filter a tank that size will be a waterfall no matter how well it is made. The Rena XP2 is about right for that tank or the Marineland C series or even an Eheim if you are made of money. I just got a new XP2 on ebay for under $100 delivered to my door.
