Noisy Fluval 205

The noise is so irritating, it's louder than the 305, 3 light fixtures, and my computer all rolled into one. What the heck is wrong with my Fluval 205 Canister Filter?

I've taken it apart and cleaned it several times, even swapped out with another one at the fish store, and it still makes the same annoying hum racket. Sounds like a mini jack hammer.

Filters should naturally make SOME kind of noise, but yours does sound a little excessive.

I am curious what you have your filter placed on and its location. And I am also curious as to where exactly the sound is coming from if you listen closely...can you pinpoint the part of the filter?

Sometimes I notice if the tubing or power cord is touching a filter, even that could produce a rather loud vibrating noise. I would make sure it is nice and level and secure to the ground or surface it is on, any wires and tubings are free from touching it, and everything is seated properly.

The filter is in the cabinet under the tank, less than 4.5 feet as required. Nothing is touching as you mention. The noise is coming from the impeller. Te best way to describe it would be like a small refrigerator. A loud, regular, irritating buzz. When I listen closely I can hear a very regular but closely spaced kind of clacking noise. It's definitely coming from the impeller area just below the valves.

I've taken it apart and cleaned it and properly restarted it maybe 10 times now. No change.

Hmm, interesting. Maybe it is time for a impeller replacement. I know someone who has the same model filter, and from personal experience, it is supposed to be a quite filter!
