Night lighting

Hi,

Im currently using a natural daylight tube during the day from about 10:30am until 9:30 - 10pm at night, then I switch to a blue actinic bulb and leave that on during the night which simulates moonlight.

The lights are on timers which are setup to switch the lights for me incase I forget.

Is this ok to do? I have been reading that with a planted tank it is a good idea to simulate moonlight to encourage growth of the plants. Thing is Im reading these things about the fish not liking light all the time, will the moonlight tube cause issues?

Cheers

Just my personal opinion here.....

I think most fish are like people when it comes to light at night - some like a little, some want pitch black to sleep. I have one tank that gets LED moonlights almost all night (only 2-3 hrs no light) and they all seem happy. When I tried the same thing in another tank I felt it stressed the fish so that tank doesn't get much, if any, light at night. I have yet to see any change in plant growth with vs without the moonlight.

Try leaving it on for a few hours after dark and see how the fish act. You can increase or decrease the time based on what you see.

Hope that helps,
-jim

Thanks for the reply Jim I've given the light a go and the fish seem to like them on for around 12 hours each, so that it is recreating natural daylight and moonlight.

I'll keep an eye on them to see what happens over the next few days, but they seem happy enough.

Cheers

This is what I did...

http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/diy_moonlight.php

only $10 in parts, used an old cell phone charger for the hookup...I think I have the same amp he mentions, but higher voltage, I forget.

Anyway, it looks nice..
