New filter advise

Right now I have a Rena Filstar XP2 and it did a great job on my 29g but to me it's doing a so so job on my 55g. It's rated 300 gph and has 2 buckets but it's just now wow'ing me anymore. If I spend $200 on a filter, my hubby will have me sleeping in the dog house while my fish have awesome water! Any suggestions? I've seen the Fluval FX5 on ebay for a decent price, $175, but is that the way I should go? That thing is HUGE isn't it? There's also this UniMax Pro that has a built in UV Sterilizer......

Wow, major overkill in my opinion. I am all for extra filtration but I think that would make your tank into a river tank. Now if you plan to have fish that like a current then it could work fine but that is a huge filter for a 55, rated for up to 400 gallon tank. Is there any reason why you want so much filtration and potential current? If it is an issue of circulation then a good small powerhead is one way to go.

Remember, if a fish isn't native to some sort of faster water then they can actually become very stressed and it can cause all kinds of problems if the tank has too much current.

I know the XP5 is a bit big but if i was going to spend the money I want to spend it once and never need a bigger filter if I do upgrade in the future but I didn't think about the current. My little Apisto's won't like a current at all.
