Need some help with removing filter housing?

This is my aquarium, it has a blue background which houses seperate compartments for filter sponges and a pump..
I have been bought a new internal filter and would like to remove this blue background to create space
I don't want to cause any damage to the aquarium so i figured i'd ask here..
I sure hope it isn't structurally neccessary!
Here is a picture, so you can see what i mean about it.. i will also take another picture of the top of the aquarium if needed!

nope i don't think it necessary to have it if you don't wanna use it as a filter anymore. look at the side and see where the sealant is joining the glasses together is it the same as the normal aquariums.if so ,your free to remove the filter compartment of the tank. make sure are removing sealant to check for leaks.you never know.
