Need to change entire filter

I have a 20-40 aqua-tech behind tank filter, and the thing keeps getting clogged up. I've tried to rinse out the mechanical parts a few times, but it only seems to help for a few days. It's getting clogged up down, inside, the impaler(I think that's the correct word.)

I've decided to just purchase a higher quality behind tank filter. Problem is, the model I'm looking at doesn't use the same bio-filter mechanism. That's gonna cause me some problems. I don't have enough extra tank space to move the fish while the bio-filter builds up.

Suggestions?

Which model are you looking at?

Can you run both filters together?

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

That's a pretty decent idea. I think that's what I'm going to end up doing.
I can't remember the name of the filter I was looking at. It's carried by Walmart, in store, and is a little more expensive than aqua-tech.

Or you could just float the bio-filter from the new filter in the tank for a week if you don't want to run both filters.Either way would work.

The tank is fully cycled, has been running for a full year. How long will it take for a new bio-filter to build up?
