I would just give them a rinse in old tank water, the same way you did for the sponges. From what you have described these sound like some sort of sintered/ceramic media that will hold e majority of your bacteria. I wouldn't clean all the filter media in one go (if you have a single filter) but leave a couple of weeks between cleaning each type of media. If you have two filters then do all of the media in one filter and then a couple of weeks later do the other.

thanks for that,,yea they are kind of ceramic type things but i deffinatly know they for the media ect....i have 3 seperate media sponges/filters along the top of my tank so i just gave them a tiny quick rinse in my water that im taking out,but will do it every few weeks like you suggest by giving a quick rinse (in safe water)...would it also be good to clean my internal filter sponge aswell (i mean internal as its one that sticks to the inside of my glass and sucks water up to my media) which i guess you know what i mean lol..

Yeah, it would be good to give the internal one a squeeze in old water you took out too. As RSV mentioned, alternate weeks to clean the sponges so you won't have any bacteria die off; you shouldn't but in the odd event that you do, you will have plenty of back up bacteria to keep your cycle going nice and steady!

You can give any part of your filter media a good old swish in old tank water, that includes the ceramic tubes, any carbon media and sponges that you may have ^_^
