I have a c220. It hums but nothing like the noise from the HOB I have an at work (an AC model). The first week I had the tank running I slept on the couch (sick, needed to be able to sit up while sleeping) and was surprised by just how quite it was even once the house was asleep and I was right beside it.

I did find that the bio balls rattled around, so I tossed those. They are useless anyway so I replaced that tray with more floss, a better biological filter bed.

If you lift it off of the surface it is on does it subside or keep humming at the same level? If it subsides, put some rubber matting or something to isolate it from the shelf/floor. If it doesn't, then you'll want to take it apart and re-assemble it tray for tray to be sure that everything fits properly, seals are in the right places etc. Check the impeller to be sure that it is free moving as well. With the release mechanism doing this is quick enough to not be a hassle.

Total years fish keeping experience: 7 months, can't start counting in years for a while yet.

The shotgun approach to a planted tank with an LED fixture

Small scale nitrogen cycle with a jar, water and fish food; no substrate, filter etc
