Loud Biowheel?

Hello all,

I've got a 10g tank in my dorm room with a Marineland filter in it. When the biowheel is spinning, it makes quite a bit of splashing. This is fine during the day, I don't mind the ambient noise... but it keeps me up when I'm trying to sleep.

Would it defeat the purpose of the biowheel to only have it running during the day? I can keep the rest of the filter running and sleep fine... but that biowheel is just too noisy.

try re-positioning the spray bar and make sure your tank is filled as high as possible. I have the same thing in my kids' nap room and it went from loud splashing to subtle white noise by doing those things.

As Stephanie points out bringing up the water level helps alot. If the noise still bothers you I suppose you could pop out the biowheel before you go to bed at night and let it float on top of the water. As long as the biowheel stays wet the beneficial bacteria will be fine.

Lol, I forgot to mention that I've already fooled with the water level and such as much as I can. I've filled it to practically overflowing and it doesn't seem to help much.

I think I will end up just taking it out and floating it in the water at night. That's what I did last night and it worked... I just wanted to make sure that the beneficial bacteria really would be okay with that. Thanks!
