Yea, the grounding rod works just fine, unless some bozo messed up the ground on the outlet you plug it into - ouch!

Go GFCI for sure and get a circuit tester to make sure everything on the outlet/circuit is properly protected! BTW, it won't generally hurt the fish if there is an in-tank electrical short, just the fishkeeper as they make a tank-to-ground connection through their body
