lighting questions

Im just curious why with planted aquariums becoming so popular, all the higher powered light fixtures on the market are sold with actinic bulbs in them.

for instance its nearly impossible to find anything over oh 15 watts or so (or is it 18) for my 10g betta chick tank. its a bit easier to find a CF fixture for my 29g tank but still a pain in the backside.

what gives? actinics are pretty much useless for anything but reefs and SWs right? do I need to buy a ballast and build my own fixture to get the kind of lighting I read about in planted aquariums?

It is not easy to find but a lot of companies will swap out bulbs for full spectrum ones if you ask nicely. Big Al's had a couple the last time I looked that were full spectrum.

Yeah, I had the same prob with my 10G tank. You'll have an easy time finding larger "freshwater" lights, but it's hard to find a high output light fixture for a 10G. I ended up buying a 40 watt CF by Current USA and switching out the actinic for a 6,700/10,000k bulb. They *do* make a bulb that works with the fixture, they just don't sell the fixture with it.

thats one thing I wanted to avoid with CF fixtures, buying bulbs to go in them once I buy them! but alas, I guess I cant win em all. I might just steal a second NO strip light for it from somewhere (thats 3 wpg for my 10g) but *shrug*.

no love for the plants guys eh lol
