a lighting question and a tank question

Right now im running 2 coralife color-max 48" 40 watt bulbs on my 110 gallon tall tank. this leaves me 2 problems.

1) the glass has a natural greenish tint to it. this tank was used, and its probably several years old, and id like to get less of that tint through it. could hotter (color temp wise) bulbs like 10,000k to 20,000k help overcome some of the greenish tint?

2) I want to start replacing the plastic plants with real ones bit by bit. and with only 80 watts of lighting, I dont have much to work with. whats the best way to start getting some plants in there without the additional monthly energy cost of powering VHO bulbs? I have a VHO capable ballast but thats what, 220 watts for a pair of 48" bulbs? thats nuts to have on 8-10 hours a day unless i break down at least ONE other tank to save on the heater's usage :\
