Lighting on a 95Gallon PLANTED tank

Okay so I went to the lfs today. They have set of lights (2 bulbs) in a 48" fixture which would be fine I'm guessing for my 60" tank since they don't sell 5foot lights that I know of... but anyways new its 149.99. He has one set of used ones that he's willing to sell me for only 75$ with 2 brand new 6500k rated bulbs full spectrum.. I guess what I'm asking is either of these lights going to work well on my 5foot , 21inches deep tank? And if yes, will the used ones work just as well as the new ones since he is giving me new bulbs? (Said also if they stopped working for any other reason to bring them in and they'd check, if they can't fix them and it's been less then 6months, I can have a new set free of charge!!!!) Well give me your opinions quick.. not sure how long they will last and the shop closes in 2hrs!

I think it would all depend on how old the used light fixtures are and what conditions they have been in, new bulbs is good and to be expected but the only part that can really fail on a florescent light fixture is the ballast. Depending on how much its been used and the conditions its been used in (humidity and temp) determines how long it will last. But that being said a ballast should last a pretty long time so it would be a worth while risk to buy the used fixture.

Well if the fixture goes out for whatever reason in the first 6months I get a new one to replace it, And he said he was replacing the ballast.. the lights with whatever specturum bulbs I wanted. I think I was told to get a red/blue spectrum at 6500k is this correct? And a green/something color around 6500k to bring the color out in the fish... Any help?

yes something around 6500k is best for plants. i have one 6500 and one 6700k in my tank - i assume the 6500 is for optimal plant growth and the other is to bring out the colour of the fish

one full spectrum (daylight) around 6500K and the second either another full spectrum or a cool white type (marginally more blue)

lights

presumably you like your plants then just get the two 6500 kelvin rated bulbs you were recomended and if you can add a standard full spectrum light behind the plant lights to add more of the humans visible spectrum....as far as purchasing lights its about your pocket book...if you have the money get the new lights ...the ballast is extremly expensive and as mentioned before its life can be greatly deminished in high humidity like a local fish store...on the other hand if it was kept in good shape and he is confident enough to refund you a new one if this one fails you could save enough money for another light or the multitude of other products you will ultimatly purchase.....keep us posted...ADIOS...

I'll probally go with the used ones.. and slowly save up for a new set within the next year or so. But thanks guys, Im'a go with one 6500K for the plant growth and I hope Byron gets back to me what the other light he uses with use duels so I can get the same as him.. I think it was a Flo-something brand.
