I'm ready for the pressure.
The drama and the pleasure!
If there is one thing I want to see here, it's HUMOR.
I believe I can fly!
I believe I can touch the sky!
I think about it every night and day!
I stand in awe of my body.

Depends if you have plants ? do you ? If not the lights are only there for your benefit so you can see the fish. :D

Set your lights for a convient time for yourself then. Fish will not benefit from 12hrs per day for no reason.

My scenario:
I have two separate light fixtures on timers. One is a more subdued light which goes on around 7am. My main, much brighter, lights turn on around 1pm, at the same time the other lights are turned off. Then at around 6pm my main lights turn off, and just the subdued lights remain on until around 10pm.

So I'd agree with everyone else. Leave them on for however long you want, and whatever is most convenient to you. So long as you aren't leaving them on for too long, leading to potential algae problems.
