My scenario:
I have two separate light fixtures on timers. One is a more subdued light which goes on around 7am. My main, much brighter, lights turn on around 1pm, at the same time the other lights are turned off. Then at around 6pm my main lights turn off, and just the subdued lights remain on until around 10pm.
So I'd agree with everyone else. Leave them on for however long you want, and whatever is most convenient to you. So long as you aren't leaving them on for too long, leading to potential algae problems.
