let there be light(ing)

I was just wondering that the different types of lights are all for. I got my 110gal set up yesterday and it came with flourescent tube holders powered by a VHO light balast, no clue what it does lol

1) whats the difference between the types of lights? flourescent, metal halide, VHO, that kinda thing

2)whats the difference in the K ratings? or regular vs Actinic?

3) what kinda light do i need for something as big and deep as a 110 tall freshwater tank? no plants for the moment, but i might get one or two of those really long ones that climb to the surface

thanks for filling me in you gurus you :D

That article would lead me to believe i need the VHO bulbs for my 110 tall afterall! regular T12 40watt 48" bulbs would only be 80 watts. per the calculator on the 2nd link they would say I need around 200 watts and change just to be in the middle of the road!

60 bucks a year in bulbs, here I come!

well, its looking like finances are going to forbid setting up the 110 gallon for now, much to my dismay. At least until I'm forced to set it up when my severums start getting big :)

but still, im curious as to peoples opinions on how much light is too much or not enough, and so on!
