homemade stands for a 75 gallon.

Hi, has anyone built a stand for a 75 gallon? If so, do you have any tips or advice. I'm getting the aquarium and some equipment for free. And I know that a stand will be $$. Any body know what a 75 weighs when full of water.

The water alone (minus the tank) weighs 600 lbs. (75gl x 8lbs)

Keep in mind that a 75g is deeper front-to back than a 55g by about six inches.

If you look under my 55g that stand & hood is what I built and it was cheap (compared to the pressboard stands you find at the store). http://www.fishtanks.net/aquariums/p...45394_full.jpg

Just measure your tank, as you desire give it maybe 1-2" overhang on each side for the top of the stand. If you go to any home store they have "shelf" wood which comes in light and dark colored woods (whatever your preference) and I just bought the one's that fit the size I wanted for my stand; cut them to height, routed the top's edge, gave it all a clear coat and done. Just be sure for your size tank (weight) to buy thicker wood (I used 1" thick all the way around works great for 55g but not a 75g I'd think) and for extra support it does help a lot adding the shelves in the middle like I did here and don't forget to add a back where you tie/ screw everything together!

Do not forget that any rocks, aggregate you are adding will increase the weight. I always base myself with the rule of thumb 1 gallon = 10 pounds. Do keep in mind also the size of the feet if you are building it yourself, the wider the more the weight is spread morre evenly.
