Grech GW-302 Filter not working HELP!!!!

I just bought this canister filter and i cant seem to get it working. Ive been trying for hours now and still no luck. I can get the water to start sucking down the tube but then it stops, like there is not enough suction to keep it going. Canister is full of water and starts pumping but like I said it just stops. Anyone know how to help???

I have no experience with those filters, but how high are you pumping above the filters head? Maybe raise the canister up closer to the height of the tank? Otherwise, I don't know.
