Hey! Welcome to Tropical Fish Keeping!

Air pumps are great because they can provide extra aeration for the tank, however, some fish will not appreciate the aeration (such as bettas, etc.).

If you tell us what kind of fish you have, and what kind of filtration you have we could help you alot better.

Hope you enjoy the forum! :D

Hello and welcome to TFK. As small fry has said some fish like and some don't like the extra water movement. Also if you have live plants in the tank that you want to keep the surface aggitation to a minimum.

Assuming you have a proper filter then it's not likely to be necassary. With a poor filter, or none at all then I would recommend an air pump.
