agreed! sponges are great, i just like the 3i for its cost and simplicity

Dedicated, converted, lowes / home depot bulb buyer!

Sponge filters are good for QT tanks because they are far simpler to sterilize if you have to do that. Once you figure in the air pump there's no real savings between a sponge and a power filter. Personally I use a Penguin 100 in my 10 gallon QT because I couldn't stand the air pump noise from my previous sponge filter. The sponge was falling apart and I was going to have to replace it so instead I spent a few more bucks and got a new power filter.
