A hob is going to be cheaper, most likely, than a canister filter. One thing to consider is if you may go with live plants. Even in the slightest chance then put the money you will spend on a hob towards a canister now. With live plants in a 55g you'll want a canister. I just set up a live planted 55g with a Rena xp 3 canister.
With the prices of the Eheim 2213 filters being posted I would go that route. If you'd spend 30-40 dollars on a new hob it's only twice that for the Eheim and it will clean that water well.
I think a Rena xp2 would work on a 55g as well. I opted for a bit bigger as the stated flows of canister filters are without media in them. The media cuts the flow some.

Well... I wanted the Rena Xp3 called the lfs that had one, traveled the hour to get there, and **a-ha they sold it**

So I ended up buying a Enhiem Ecco 2236 from Petco - It was more expensive and less flow, but I'm glad I did as my HOB filter is flowing even more slow today.

I figure 3 weeks together (if the old fiter can take it) and then I'm removing the old filter entirely.

I popped into the LFS today. This particular store is actually the closest to my house, but I never knew it was there until last week. They had new, unopened Fluvals on sale at an incredible price - 305/$99 and 405/$129 (cash only).

I'm seriously tempted to upgrade the 305 on my 45g to the 405 (don't even need to move the hoses - the AquaStop valve on the 305 and 405 is identical, so I just swap the media and canisters). But then I'd have to get another tank to use my month-old 305 with....
