filter media arrangement

Hi to everyone on the forum!

I have a question on filter media. I have kept fish for a couple of years but just recently moved into using external filters.
Could someone explain what I should have in my Eheim 2011 and my Fluval 205.

I know that prefilteration media goes at the bottom and biomax goes at the top and special cleaners go in between, but what I wish to know is whether I need to use a filter media like pollywool to take out the small particles, or is this just optional?

My Eheim was given to me and works well running its propeller on a metal skewer, an invention of mine! The Fluval is new but the instructions are not clear to me as to whether I should use pollywool. Is the foam filtration sufficient on its own?

If foam is sufficient, then there isn’t anywhere to put foam in my Eheim. The pollywool seems to clog up after about 3 weeks and seems expensive to keep replacing. Perhaps I am not putting it in in the right quantity or in the right manner.

My setup is:
X3 3 foot freshwater tanks + x1 1 foot hospital freshwater tank
X3 internal fluval
X1 fluval 205
X1 Eheim 2011

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards
Mark

polywool jams up after 3 days in a high flow filter a good choice would be medium to course foams only as detris that goes throgh one will get caght in the next ive never had any problem not using it in filters with decent sized volumes

only one size of foam

Hi, thanks for your response.

I have never seen different grades of foam for the 205 fluval over here in the UK. I shall have to look up what you mean by detris, as I'm not farmiliar with that
