filter media?

I've heard on here about many different things to use like sponges etc, but want to what's best. I have a marineland emperor 400 pro. The regular media is two cartridges with carbon and two media containers, for whatever you please. A while back I had carbon in the containers, but took them out and put in some of Rena's micro filtration pads. I did this because I read that carbon is bad for a planted tank. They're wide enough, but too short. I was trying to be creatative, but now I want help. What would you reccomand?

I have used both ceramic media and filter floss in my containers. Depends on what you want to achieve really.
I am actually not using them for anything at the moment and they will be retired from my tank tomorrow.

10g Fry / Hospital / QT tank (as needed)

75g Saltwater Reef, Ocellaris Clownfish, Lyretail Antias (baby), Lemon damsel, Longtail Fairy Wrasse, purple dottyback, snails, crabs and a few LPS corals.

220g Still sitting empty (come on Lottery I need the numbers to come up!)

I really just keep my water it's best, not only looking clean, but actually clean. Can you further explain the types you use. I've heard of filter floss, but I couldn't find any, when I went looking.

The ceramic media was from Fluval and for biological.

The filter floss was just a big roll I got from LFS for about $8, cut into strips and then a small piece over the top of the strips....super cheap, pulled a lot from the water. No need to wash / rinse it, just throw it away.

The RENA pads, I have thought about using but as you mentioned they are too short, I considered cutting them up, but for the price of them versus filter floss, filter floss wins hands down.

Ok, I'll have to keep an eye out. As for the the ceramic media would this replace the cartridges or work with them?

I put it in the grey extra cartridges that came with the filter. I used it with the blue carbon pads.

Even if you cannot find filter floss, pillow stuffing material from walmart or any stores that sells bedding will work just as well and is essentially the same thing.

OK, one more question, How would I place everything? I know the pads... then what the floss? Also can you provide a link for the ceramic media, so I have a better idea of what I'm looking for.

Pads in first, then the grey cartridges with the filter floss / media (going from front nearest the weir to back).

You can also use filter floss in the grey cartridges and place a small bag of ceramic rings right in the bottom of the filter if they fit...

Here are the ceramic media I used, although it was a smaller box than this.
