filter making a lot of noise ~ help!

i am using two emperor 400 filters in my tank... one of them was making a lot of noise... like grinding noise...

i removed that filter, fit the parts back tightly and plugged in it... after it finished pushing all the air out, the filter worked for 3 minutes and started that grinding noise again...

i removed the propellers from both filters and inter changed them...

this filter became quiet and the other one started making all the noise...

can anyone w\ exp using the emperor filter help me plz

it usually happens then the impeller housing is dirty, clean the impeller houseing and it should quiet down, it could also be the impellor is shifting a little bit when it turns, make sure it fits back in the housing properly.

funny part, its a brand new filter... running for hardly 2 weeks... may be i should just return 'em.

let me try fixing the housing unit tighter...

my older filters seem to go through buzzing periods like this, I think it happens if junk gets into the housing, but usually after an hour or so it goes back to normal? are you using a sand substrate/ have live plants that could be getting sucked in?

try fitting a sponge over the end of the intake, this may keep big particles from getting in and causeing your filter to make noise.

just pea size gravel and stones... no sand or plants... not even fish.

everything is pretty much brand new... i think its malfuntioning housing unit... i am going to try exchanging them @ petsmart.

hopefully they will accept the return.

Generally when mine starts making noise, it's because snails have gotten down into the impeller.

same here... with new gravel a couple floaty pieces always get sucked in. the emperors are great filters. worst case id just return the noisey one and get a new replacement one, but make sure its cleaned out really well before you fire her up for the first time!
