I tried two fish stores today (petco and petsmart) neither had sponge filters, the employees didn't even know what they were XD

That's pathetic. Sponge filters have been a part of the hobby for many many years and are still very popular for small tanks. I had a young lady at my local fish store tell me that guppies and angelfish will get along well in the same tank because they're both egg- layers. Ridiculous.

My sponge filter came in today. It's bigger than I thought! Does my tank have enough beneficial bacteria to turn off my HOB?
