favorite water conditioners

Hey guys

i was just goofing off, thinking about getting some water conditioner for water changes even though im on a private well, you know, to be on the safe side. I was wondering what conditioners you all use and why, and what ones to avoid, and why.

i see some just take care of chlorine and stuff, but there are a bunch of them that also reduce ammonia and nitrite toxicity, which might seem like not all that great of an idea as i would think it could affect the balance of the tank.

what do you all think, and which do you prefer?

I recently switched from Amquel to Tetra Aqua Aqua Safe based on reviews I read online. It seems from what I've experienced Amquel does well for a very established tank and Aqua Safe is better for newer tanks (due to the "BioExtract" they offer). I'm not sure the bioextract adds anything, but its working well in my tanks so far.

Hope this helps,

I've had lots of luck with Amquel and used it most of the time. I prefer not to use one with a bacteria supplement just because I like to use a seperate bacterial supplement for more control. Currently I use Prime by Seachem because it is a good product and more concentrated. Amquel is 1 capful per 10 gallons while Prime is 1 capful per 50 gallons! So for a larger tank I dont go through it as much. Both will detoxify ammonia, nitrite and nitrate which is not a bad thing but you shouldn't rely on your water conditioner to control your tank parameters. Honestly though, a conditioner should remove heavy metals, chlorine and chloramine and most water conditioners on the market will do that just fine.
