I recently ordered what is sold as bioforever super cartridges for use in Emperor bio wheel filters such as the empeor 280 and the Emperor 400. The cartridges are manufactured by Magnavore and can be found at www.DrsFosterSmith.com They come with two carbon impregnated filter sponges inside seperated by a plastic divider that is easily removed allowing you to fill the void or space therein with your media of choice or with filter floss as I have done. They are made from hard plastic and have rows of fins not unlike the fins on an automobile radiator. These fins serve to collect and hold beneficial bacteria and the tiny holes throughout thesecartridges allow water to pass through. I simply cut some blue filter floss into pieces just large enough to fit into the opening and removed the carbon impregnated sponges or floss that came with the filters and the plastic divider. You could as mentioned fill them with ,carbon, ceramic beads for biological filtration or filter floss. Their design makes it easy to change the floss or sponge or whatever is used without removing the filter cartridge.I have been running them on an Emperor 400 with just filter floss for a number of weeks now and am pleased with their craftsmanship and function. Thought i would share with those who might be interested. Truly,, it may be the last cartridge you will ever need to buy and no,, I am in no way asscociated with ,nor do I or have I received any compensation from Magnavore or Marineland. Just sharing an excellent alternative to cartridges sold for the Emperor filter. Anyone else tried them yet?

I've seen them, I'm not entirely convinced they're the answer though. My personal feeling is the biowheel is all the biological filter space you really need and I'm more concerned with the mechanical removal ability of whatever winds up in the cartridge area of my filters. I've gone with the Dr. Fosters and Smith brand frame replacements and just use them stuffed to the gills with filter floss.

Yes .I have tried the ones you mention as well. The bio forever cartridges worked better for me and were easier to service . I just pulled out the blue pad that I cut to fit , squeezed it out ,and stuck it back in.As mentioned the holes or perforations through out the cartridge allow plenty of water to pass through and the pad, sponge, floss etc catches what gets by the fins. Like you, I consider mechanical and biological filtration to be of utmost concern but I am ordering another two of the super cartridges for I am impressed with their capabilities in both areas.

I may give them a try in my african cichlid tank. I've tossed the canister filter idea and will be going with a pair of Emperor filters so I'll be needing some aftermarket cartridges.

I think you might like them. The void or space available after removing the two carbon impregnated sponges and divider provides considerable space for media of your choice. I should add that ,The super cartridge fills up the space in filter box so that the use of the extra cartidges that come with the Emperor models for extra biological media , wont fit. But the space provided as described once the divider and sponges are removed ,more than makes up for the extra cartridges provided for these filters.
