Make sure to check your hoses when you first install them they're fairly stiff but once warmed up by house temp and the warmer fish tank water they often kink on the rear where they come outta your tank if it kinks enough you have a slower flow rate too. Just a thought

Well those black little cone things would be the best bet as far as comparing it to your floss. I wouldn't over due your floss either. Now that I think of it.. I never really understood why you were filtering your water. why don't you just do a bunch of water changes, if you have no fish in there. Get a tupperware and cut some holes in it, when you siphon your water out, just make sure you pour it back into the floating tupperware so it doesn't stir up your substrate. I'd say do this everyday 70% 80% water changes. don't have any filtration on, let the floating sediment settle during the day. Keep up with the water changes until you're fully crystal clear. To reduce your current when you do do filtration, cut sponge filters and rubberband them to your output hose holes to deflect direct current. Post some pictures too!!!
