So it's like a powerhead for the filter rather than the spraybar?
It certainly seems to agitate the water very well.

Yes and it doubles as a airater(however you spell it) . The water flow siphons air via the clear tubing

Aside from the jet itself, how much current does it create in the tank?
Is it recommended for planted tanks, or does it decrease the CO2 too much?

what else would create a current besides the jet? it does move the water quite a bit you have to have it facing the length of your tank not the width.

i have never heard of aerators taking CO2 out of the water. if anything the fish will be more healthy. i wouldnt worry about it unless you have grass
