Why does my heater not stay on. The water temp goes nowhere near the set temp i wanted and goes off for hours. IS it broken, or do i need to keep it in the tank and let it get used to the temp before i turn it on? what am i doing wrong?

couple things. is it a Visa-Therm Deluxe or a Visa-Therm Stealth ?., what size tank ??

1st,what are you using to check the tank water temp ?? I suggest you get an in tank thermometer. They be left floating or stuck to the inside of the tank glass with the suction cup, more accurate than the stick on the outside glass type

2nd..its not un-common for a heater to heat to a different temp than what the dial is set at ( I have one that is set on 72 degrees and actually heats the tank to 80 degrees...and another that is set to 82 but only heats the tank water to 76 ) most are only off a degree or two though

3..yes,leave the heater in the tank for 15-30 min. then plug it in (Visa-Therm heaters don't have a light to tell you that the heater is actually ON and heating, do they?? I don't think so,maybe the Deluxe does..so you need a decent in tank thermometer) it may take a day,2 days, maybe even a week to get the temp set where you want it.. a quicker way is to fill a 5 gallon bucket with water, leave the water get to room temp first, them put the heater in the bucket of water along with a thermometer and adjust the heater until the water is at the temp you want.

The Visa-Therm are a decent heater, alot of people use them,I don't care for them though, because of them not having an idicator light to tell you when the heater is on and heating..so all of my heaters are Aqueon but one All-Glass (now Aqueon though)except for two that the dials are off on,they are both cheap Walmart things in 10g tanks, so if it was me,I'd buy a different heater
