I am setting up a new tank, and I have not gotten any water conditioner yet. I used a new filter for this tank, so I filled up the tank with regular tap water to test the filter out. Will the unused filter media (filter cartridge) contain remnants of chlorine after a water change with de-chlorinated water? Should I buy a new filter cartridge? I know it sounds stupid, but I want to make sure I don't kill my fish.
Any dechlorinator works effectively enough that you don't have to worry. However, if your sourcewater contains chloramine (which it does in most places), you should use a conditioner that removes ammonia as well. The breakdown of chloramine into chlorine and ammonia removes the chlorine but leaves the ammonia.
Prime is most often recommended around here for it's ammonia detoxifying properties.
This is also useful -- critical, in fact -- when conducting a fish-in cycle.
filter media not only do not hold chlorine but actually help to breakdown chloramine into chlorine and ammonia.
