Distilled water vs RO/DI vs tap

Well I was just wondering what kind of water everyone here uses in their fish tanks for water changes. Personally the tap water here is unsuitable for use in my main tank although I do use it in some of the smaller tanks with hardier fish. It all depends on what goals I'm trying to achieve and which fish are in a particular tank.

My biggest question though would be the differences between RO/DI and distilled. I've used both and found little difference. Keep in mind that I am reconstituting such water to restore certain trace elements. With that in mind I fail to see much of a difference between the two other than the distilled water being more pure. I'm currently looking into some information on the distilled water I normally require to see what if any possible contaminants are still present and will keep you posted on the results of that. Just wondering what everyone's preference is and why.

Also I've noticed that most people consider RO (reverse osmosis) and DI (deionized) water interchangably. While I know the processes used to create the final water product are different I'm more interested in knowing what differences if any are present in the final product. While I have a whole lot of aquarium equipment and testing supplies I don't have anywhere near the capability to compare many of the trace elements remaining in the final product.

well if you were to believe the label on the drinking water that walmart sells I believe it qualifies as reverse osmosis...I'd have to check next time I'm there buying distilled though.

I save all all of the empty gallons for when I move. Your right it states PROCESSED BY REVERSE OSMOSIS AND OZONATION. Ive testes the water and it reads zero on everything so there was no reason to change it.
