I asked this question maybe a year ago. But I was looking for a bit more information.
I am just wondering if a completely silent filter is actually possible? I am looking for literally no noise. My aquarium is maybe 3 feet from my bed. I have trouble sleeping (which is why I'm awake right now) and I am very peculiar about noise when trying to sleep. I sleep in complete silence.
That said, all my fish died with some illness that I could not cure although I tried. Right now it has no filters running and only has one lone amano shrimp and some snails. It's been that way for a year. I feel like it would be fun to have a few fish again, and would be relaxing to watch.
Anyways, I always write a lot. Basically, I am looking into an Eheim filter because I heard they are quiet. I know a lot of people here have them, so how quiet are they exactly? I would probably be able to hear them in an absolutely silent room, no? I know I sound picky, but that's the quirky way I am -- the noise will drive me crazy trying to sleep and possibly even to study.
No, oxygen won't be an issue, especially if you go with a spraybar aimed towards the surface.
Were you interested in doing more live plants/ figuring out what was up with your light?
Also, some fish don't like lots of current (angels come to mind from what I've read about them), so see about getting a spray bar so you can adjust as necessary. I don't know if eheim includes one with their canisters, my Fluval didn't come with one.

My angels stay in the current unless they are resting at night when they stay in the plants avoiding current. Also the eheims do include the spray bar ... and tubing is to be cut yourself so play with positions before you cut the hose so you cut the right amount.
I second that. I'm sure there is some cheap biomedia that isn't porous enough to work however I can vouch that is not the case with what comes with your eheim(and all but 1 of my filters). When I was playing "musical tanks" a while ago that was almost exclusively what I used to seed the new filters. I only skipped that on anything below 20g and used floss as it was easier to fit enough to do an instant cycle with the smaller filter.
Thanks for all the comments. good to know the oxygen exchange will be fine. I hope they don't rattle! :s that's even more annoying... I'd rather have a constant hum.
There's nothing "up" with my light. it's fine. I will probably just let the plants I have grow. Hopefully they will reproduce. I may also buy some aquarium lily bulbs to see what happens. I love the way they look. I might also get swords because they did well until I neglected them. We'll see what happens.
Well I hope the 2217 isn't too powerful! I'm a bit nervous haha. It filters 5x my tank per hour which is ideal I read.
I think ill order it today. ... Still a bit nervous, probably unfoundedly. It just is so expensive I hope I love it )
everything you need is there. You will just need to figure out your ideal configuration then cut the hose accordingly. If you have issues with the instructions feel free to start another thread on that ..and I will help as best I can along with others.
I'm sure you've read stories of tanks leaking too....
There is an inherent risk of things getting wet in this hobby. It's very unlikely, but it's there. All you can do is make sure that if something like that happens, that it isn't a result of user error
VERY unlikely.. unless set up wrong or if you don't remember to use the valves to shut everything off after unplugging..and even then it's safe to have a towel set up uderneath during canister maintinence ( don't need to do that often) and I like to once all valves closed off to take to my bathtub to do routine cleaning..again remember not to over do that. all tubes leading to and from this filter come with double sided shut off valves for extra safety (both intake and output sides). That is a nice feature.
Alright thanks! I think I'll order right now... I'm getting it through amazon from big al's. please yell at me if big Al's isn't a reputable place ! Lol
Hahaha too true! I guess I was just thinking... 265 gallons per hour?! 50 gallons of water would be in my bedroom in 12 minute!! But I'd probably have to be very unlucky ;P it would probably be a small leak anyhow!
I am so excited!!! My tank is almost cleaned (all the gravel and algae.... Five 50-75% water changes later...) and I will get my filter next week!!
One easy leak check is to check the connections after the water is flowing. Tightening them cold (room temp) then running water through at slightly higher temps will soften the tubing just a bit... enough to possibly cause a leak. I had that, just a slight re-snug is all it needs.
So my filter finally came! I'm setting it up now. I have one question. Is the carbon filter pad, which it recommends to remove after 2 weeks, necessary? I have plants and I don't want it removing all the nutrients. However, it almost sounds like its there to absorb any chemicals from the new filter, so if that's the case I don't really mind leaving it. Let me know what you all think. Thanks!
I know but I don't want to be wasting 2 weeks of fertilizing. Well, I removed it and jammed my old filter media into the canister... Lol.
:| sadly the outflow bar won't fit horizontally on the side of the tank (the width is too small). It only fits on the back so one side has a lot of current and the other isn't as much. I just put it on a slant so it blows across the entire length of the tank though so it seems a little more even. (Sorry typing this as I'm adjusting it.)
Anyways, it seems very powerful.... Will my angels be okay? It's on a 50g tank. 265gph. I heard the power will reduce in a few weeks..
I had the same issue with my 72 gallon and the spray bar. Could always do a diy sprsy bar from pvc. That or might be able to trim the spray bar with a hack saw, could always search online for modifications. I have my spray bar on one side of the tank and inlet on the other side, seems to be working well. Haven't had any issues with my angels and the current. I do have my spray bar positioned so that the openings point to the back of the tank and slightly up, if that makes sense.
I think I can sort of imagine that... Not exactly though. I think the angels will be okay. I don't have it on full blast yet I'll just adjust it more and I'm sure ill figure it out xD.
It's not as quiet as I hoped! But it's actually pretty quiet. But not to the point here I have to hold it to my ear to tell if its on or anything. I can tell its on from the doorway entering my room. It's not in the stand yet. I'm using an old piece of furniture as a tank stand. It has cabinets underneath, but the shelves are build in. I want to knock one out but I'm worried it might compromise the structure a bit. :/ but if I can get it in there I may sound proof the inside ;P we can see how that goes! Haha
Agent, we have old tools we never use. Ill consider cutting it down. It's working fine for now though and I am a bit afraid of breaking it... Honestly the only bad part about slanting it is it looks tacky. Haha. I may not get enough surface agitation too.
Cut it! It will be fine. I had to do it twice just to get the right size.. I was freaked out.. butI know eheim would sell you another spray bar and send it quickly if you did mess it up(which is unlikely). Better then my XP4 that didn't even come with a spray bar..or media(still waiting in that stupid spray bar).
Haha okay, well, I'll consider it! I don't think I have a large wire cutter... or even a small one. I think we may have a hack saw. (My dad's tools). Your positive you just didn't get lucky?? I feel like I have bad luck... >_<
Oh on a side note I'm just curious if anyone would give me their opinion... I stuffed the old filter media into the canister. Could this cause a mini cycle or will this be okay? I think it'll be fine. I just ran out of my ammonia test supplies though, so I won't exactly be able to test and I don't want to buy one -- I'd rather get my rainbowfish some company. >.> (I go to college, and I don't have a summer job so I have absolutely no income (except for doing some work for my mom occasional) nor any saved money, lol. I just have a tiny bit left on a petsmart gift card. )
(side note rant: The test kit I have makes you do 14 drops of reagent #1, and 7 drops of each reagent #2 and reagent #3... The punch line: reagent #2 has 6 mL of solution, and reagent #3 has 10 mL of solution -- why did they give me an extra 4 mL of reagent #3... I just don't understand )
Not lucky..just good tools. Take it to your dads tool box and see what you can use. Hacksaw..ok.. maybe heat it a bit to cut but I didn't do it that way.. but have cut tubing like that.
As far as media. I used seeded media media that was from another established tank and I think if I remember I put middle loser to the top(IDK..was a quick after thought). Tank has been cycled pretty much right away from set up. And last test( few days ago) was a solid 0-0-0
The Tom rapids mini canister was too strong for the 10 gallon so in addition to widening the holes, I also drilled some holes in the back of the spraybar and drilled a hole in the end cap.
As to the hearing the canister now, I can attest that my Fluval 206 was a bit noisy (not nearly as bad as most HOB, though) at first but within a few days quieted right down. I literally can't hear it unless I'm within a few inches of it now.
I think they just need time to 'break in'.
After maintenance it makes a bit of noise, but only for an hour or so and then its silent again. Posted via Mobile Device
It seems like the filter is getting a bit quieter. I really want to put it in the cabinet but idk how to tell if its safe to knock the shelf out. Not sure the table was made to support 500 pounds in the first place... 0:-\
Anyways, the hacksaw easily cut it without breaking. I tested it on the bendy thing that I don't really like! My only concern is that at each end of the original tree are ridges, possibly to keep some friction for the tubing. I tried putting tubing on the newly cut, smooth end, and it appears I be fine. But over time I'm not sure if it'll loosen..
The ridges are on the inside...the tubing goes on the outside..Therefor I see no way this would effect it. Unless you cut something else weird on the canister.
Oh haha I thought they were on the outside. Anyways, I cut it shorter and now it fits. But I had to cut out one of the outlet holes. Now it whistles when its full blast so I'll have to drill more holes.....
