I have a 20 gallon tank that I can't use because I don't have anything to put it on. A $50 dollar stand from petsmart is wayyy out of my price range. Are there any sites that sell aquarium stands or things like them cheap?

Maybe you could try one of those furniture outlet stores that buy overstock then sell it cheap. I needed a stand for my new 29gl so I went to a place called Unclaimed Freight and found a stand that was made to hold either a 29 or 37gl for $19 then seen the same stand in a petsmart for $120 a week later.

I once used two old artillery shell cases (shipping crates) turned on their sides. They worked well and made two instant shelves under the tank. I'm afraid they might cost a good bit at a military surplus store, assuming they are even available.

An option is to use cinderblocks and scrap wood or plywood. Make certain the wood is straight and thick.

Third possibility - post a "want to buy" in the aquarium classified forum section here. You never know what may turn up. Whatever you end up with, make certain it can support at least 150+ pounds.

Do the 2x4 diy things last very long? Or do they warp after a while?

Depends on the type of wood, weight, and how wide the open area (unsupported) under the tank. I'd recommend a center brace to prevent warping.

Check out Craisglist, or spend an afternoon and hit some thrift stores. you may really luck out, and you'd be surprised things like that are not that hard to find. Happy hunting!

well

thrift stores will probablt have something...i do like 2*4s as you can custom your stand and it is cheap as a 8 foot 2*4 is anywhere from 2-3 dollars and you would need about 4 or 5.

Could you just add a layer of 2x4s across the top after you build the frame?

wood

you could but it would be spendier than getting plyboard..and if you have the stand built to the dementions of the tank you wouldnt need a bottom...most stands dont have them.
