canister question

I have a very large tank that is on the floor, not on a stand (homemade out of timbers and a pond liner, holds turtles and not fish, almost like an indoor pond but not THAT big). Here is my simple question and I need a simple answer:
Do canister filters (e.g., fluval, eheim, or magnum) have to sit below the tank? Since it is on the floor that's not really possible but I need something powerful. Thanks.

Im not 100% sure but i dont think all types need too. Only some canisters need to if it is using a siphon pump. If it is using a pump that requires electricity then i dont think it needs to go below the tank. But what do i know, i use HOB filters

i have the fluval 305 running in my 20 gal long. (turtle poops are big)

It works best with the filter being below the tank and the manuel says the filter should not be placed above the aquarium

I really like how customizeable the filter is.

And i dont know why people complain that its hard to prime. Only takes a few pumps and ur set.

Here is my simple answer based on education and experience with an Eheim:
If you place the Eheim on the floor next to your tank the return flow will be close to if not as rated.

Thanks so much for your help guys!
Eheim is my first choice but since I can't afford it I'm going with a Fluval. It won't be above the tank but next to it on the floor. Thanks again!
