Hi guys, new here. Just got a used 180 gal fresh water with African Cichlids, vey nice. Last owner had it next to a wall and he had hang type filter and they work fine. But my set up is as a room deiveder, you can see the tank on three sides so I would like to us a canister type. Need some help to pick one out. Like to get one with a heater, good idea? Thanks Bob
I personally believe canister filters are the best for most aquaria. And one with a built-in heating unit is a good idea. I have one like this, an Eheim Professionel 2 on my 90g aquarium, and I really like it; the other tanks have canister filters (one Eheim, one Rena) and two internal heaters.
Eheim have a solid reputation for durability and effeciency. I have had mine on the 90g running for 12 years continuously with never a problem or issue; the tank temperature never varies by more than 1/2 a degree [except obviously during summer heat waves which is another issue and nothing to do with the heater].
My other Eheim has been running almost as long. The Rena I bought last year just to see how it was, I have had no problems with it in a year, and it was about 1/2 the cost of the comparable Eheim. Depending upon your budget... Eheim likes to point out that notwithstanding the initial higher cost, long-term there will be less operating cost and no issues. I did see a survey elsewhere that seemd to somewhat support this statement.
Others will undoubtedly provide their suggestions too.
I like Marineland Products. I've never tried anything, but then again, Marineland have never given me a reason to. I run a Magnum 350 Canister on my 55G tank and it does a fantastic job. You would need several of these, and the biggest one they make is the C-series 530, which is rated for a 150G tank. So even though I highly recommend the filters, you'd be better off going with something else, as Byron said Eheim and Rena both make a wonderul canister filter, you can't go wrong with either of those two.
As far as a heater, Marineland makes a fantastic heater too, their "stealth" line of heaters fully submersible, shatter-proof and a lot of people on here use them. Plus they come with a life-time guarantee!!!
