Canister Filter Media Change

I am currently running a two month old Eheim canister on my 30G tank and I was just wondering how often I should change the media? Its packed with:

"Ehfisubstrat - a large surface area biomedia and Ehfimech - to disperse the water and trap large debris."

I know there is probably a distinction with the mechanical and biological medias....

Depends on what's in the tank. The white prefilter can get damaged from small particles. You should check it every other week or so. Sometimes you can just rinse it out in tankwater. The blue inner filter can be rinsed more easily. I just learned that the stone balls in the filter have an anaerobic bacteria inside the ball which eats the nitrates. It takes 2 months or so to kick in and should be replaced once the nitrates start coming back. I don't know how long this takes.
