Bacteria Colony.

Hey guys! I've put my newly bought 2pcs sponge filter for my aquarium, because, im planning on going to sand from gravel. I just wanna know on how long does it take for the bacteria colonize in my sponge. I know that good bacteria is good for the aquarium and the fish.

If you are saying that you put the new sponge in your established tank, it will take a couple weeks to seed the new.

Ohhh. Okay. Maybe after the bacteria colonizes in the sponge, i'll change my substrate to sand.

Got another question:
- Is it enough for one sponge filter that has a size of a coffee mug to filtrate my 25g tank consisting of guppies and cories?
- And I've heard this Volcanic/Lava Rocks. Are they safe? I've heard that it also makes germs colonize in that rock. There fore, can I make my rocks all volcanic rocks?

Volcano rock is excellent for bacteria to colonize. If you plan to use it for your substrate it probably wouldn't be a good choice with the cories. If you just want to add large chunks for decorations that would work nicely.

On sponge that size should be fine for that size tank as long as you are pulling enough water through it. I have a single sponge smaller than that in my 20g but all I have in there are shrimp. Sponge filters are excellent filters and great for biofiltration. They do decently for mechanical as well.

I guess I'll go buy some chunks of those for decoration.

Thanks for the answers.
