Backgrounds?

One of my tanks has a built-in black background, but the rest of them are clear glass. Does anyone recommend backgrounds? Do they help the fish at all, or are they merely a thing of preference? I think I like the idea of covering up the hang-on filters, but I am not keep on pictures with fake fish on them. Where could I get a natural-looking one other than Petsmart or Petco (I don't want a faux picture of saltwater coral with my freshwater tank!)?

Best wishes for your fishes!

Some companies sell structured backgrounds which can be siliconed to the inside back of the tank. The only problem with these is that they have to be applied to a clean, empty tank. Here's an example of one, although there are rock effect ones available also.

No probs! If you ever decide to go with that sort of background, please post pics. I've wanted to try it out but haven't had an empty tank since I first saw them for sale. :(

Personally I don't like backgrounds except for pictures. I do like hiding the junk in the back though so maybe I am gonna have to try and come up with a DIY one for my tanks. Maybe plastic canvas with aquarium silicone to put rocks, fake plants or just some sort of texture on the canvas and give some sort of depth effect. Would also make it removeable so I can clean it if I need to or change it in some way.

Plastic canvas with silicone in waves covered by black and dark red sand could look really cool.
