Aquarium salt

Two questions about aquarium salt in a beta tank:

- On the package I have it says something about making sure the water is at peak filtration. Can the aquarium salt be added even if no filter is present?

- How often should you add aquarium salt? Every day? Once a week? Every time you do a water change?

You don't need it but if you want to use it:
Add the recommended amount
When you change the water, ONLY add the amount needed for the new water, not the whole tank.
A hydrometer is the best and really only way to go if you are going to use salt so that you do not add too much or too little and shock your fish. I do not know the recommended salinity for a betta.

Adding salt without filtration would prove disastrous for your betta. Filtration, I believe, will sift through the salt, spreading it throughout your bowl/tank, instead of letting it sit there to burn your fish. If you must add salt, then use it in minor amounts.
Someone please correct me if i'm wrong somewhere.
