I slow the flow only during feeding time, and use foam pads as opposed to finer filtration that just clog's faster.
I agree that OP should decide for him/herself which they prefer.
As for you,, you may take comfort that this is a family orientated forum for had you questioned my mental capabilities in any other arena,, my response I fear would not be to your liking.
LOL. My apologies - no need for idle threats. I only questioned your understanding of re-filtration because of what you wrote:
"If I were to reduce flow ,or throttle back the flow, (reduced efficency, and hard on filter motor's) from a filter..."
This method of return flow reduction with AquaClear filters does not reduce efficiency or negatively affect the impeller motor as you indicated - it simply draws water from both the tank AND filtered water from the filter some of the filtered water. In reality, this AC50 filter, set to lowest return flow, is still filtering 200~ gph... just through a re-filtration process that reduces the turbulence of excessive return flow rates to the tank.

'nuff said.

Both 1077 and AbbeysDad have interesting info about filtering media. Of course your preference and experience will help you decide what you want to do. Always go with whatever makes your fish healthy and happy.

I have two Aquaclear filters - one for a 10 gal and one for a 20 gal. I did choose Aquaclear over another brand because it had the option of a slower flow (only because my fish prefer slower flow) and because it seems to keep my water in my planted aquarium clear better than the other brand.
