Alternative filter media for power filter

I'm in the process of setting up my 10 gallon red eye puffer tank, and am using a Penguin Biowheel 100 I had floating around. It's a great filter but the thing that bugs me about it is that it doesn't really leave any options for anything but buying massive amounts of those stupid filter inserts.

I hate using carbon and don't have it running in any of my other tanks. The only thing I could conceive of is snipping open the filter insert and dumping out the carbon and maybe stuffing some filter floss in there. Does anyone have a different method they use?

There should at least be enough room for Bioballs, biochemstars, modified sponges, course filter pad media meant for a canister filter cut to fit in the slots, etc. There are actually lots of things you can do. Just make sure you have mechanical and biological media in there and you are set.
