Power head vs airstone

I think it depends on what you want to do. I have a powerhead in my 75 and I turn it toward the side or it puts out too much flow. If I regulate it too much, the flow will stop at some point.

I use an airstone/motor for a 40G in my 30G tank. I keep a curtain of bubbles on the side of this tank. I set the filter on the opposite ends of the tank. That way fish who dont like too much flow have refuge.

If you are trying for a lot of flow, like for hillstream loaches or such, go with the powerhead. If you just want something to provide a bit extra circulation, the airstone is fine....

Powerheads produce a more even and continuous flow. If you are worried about too much current use reverse flow when using a ugf. Marineland offers a reverse flow powerhead as well as a kit to convert their powerheads to reverse flow. I love 'em.

I would not recommend using air to power an undergravel filter in tanks bigger that 20g. They are just not powerful enough to create the needed water flow at a consistent rate of flow.

Either way, powerheads can produce current and/or optimize the usefulness of an undergravel filter plate. They can also be used to upgrade foam sponge filters. When compared to air, they are just more efficient and effective.
