I have Hydro sponge filter's that run at night in my planted tank's and switch off at light's on (Timer's)
I place foam under the air pump's (Luft air pump's) to help deaden the humming noise.
Whisper air pump's are the most quiet I have used, but seldom last more than a year.
They are cheap enough however that buying a new one doesn't break the bank

The most important medication in your fish medicine cabinet is.. Clean water.

A piece of thick foam from an old foam pillow or seat cushion works really well. It may not look very cool, but, chances are you're keeping your pump out of sight anyway. I've never had a problem with noise from even the cheapest diaphragm pumps on a 3"-4" thick piece of foam.
