Ok so...a friend has a 10g tank that she is ready to upgrade to a 40g breeder.
Alright, so as far as the hardware is concerned, I am admittedly a little lost.
Filter: I was considering a canister filter for the tank over a HOB but I am unsure of how much more beneficial it would be for this tank. I would also like to go with a filter at least one step above the minimum requirements for the tank to make sure that she has more than enough filtration in case she does get closer to being fully stocked eventually. Any suggestions (HOB vs. Canister and any specific model)?
Hood: I haven't had much luck finding full hoods for 36" tanks. I was considering using a VersaTop + a strip light (if that would even work?) that they have at the large chain stores but I would like to hear from someone who has set up a hood for a 40g breeder before. Also, should the type of lighting matter much for this? I was just considering a colormax tube if the versatop and strip hood worked out.
Also, I have heard that about 2lb per gallon is a good estimate to have good sand coverage, is this true in your experience?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
