so I am planning on buying a new one. What type should I buy for a 30 gallon freshwater tank with a sand bottom? I was looking at a aquaclear power filter, but I am not sure if this is suitable for sand and/or what size I would need?!?!
Also, the person I bought it off of provided me with the sand she had used before, am I safe to assume that I can re-use this sand?
I have an AC 70 on my 30 gallon with sand. It's a great, quiet filter. You can get it much, much cheaper on Amazon than at a fish store.
I'm going to disagree with the previous posts about buying new sand. Having washed playsand, it's a huge, huge undertaking, and living in an apartment pretty much eliminates that idea :)
If you can find that black blasting sand, perhaps that is an idea. Can't find that at the Home Depot or Lowes around here. Sand in petstores isn't that cheap. Even on-line for washed sand, delivered, you're looking at about $40 plus.
If it were me, I'd take the sand you got, and rinse it well in hot water. If you have a way to let it dry before you put it in (spread out on a table) that would be good. Ich won't live once it's dried out. I'm not really sure what diseases you'd have to worry about. IMO hot water will kill most anything that could possibly be in the sand.
