Why won't my Mollies breed?!

I have had Mollies in my tank for months now... a male and a female.

The male is always rubbing himself against the female and it's pretty obvious that they have mated... infact I've seen it.

However, the white mollie female has got a bit chubbier over the past month but nothing is happening. Infact, today she looks slimmer then she has in the past month.

I'm starting to wonder whether or not I have infertile fish as my girlfriends mum's mollies have bred twice in the past 3 months!

Here are some details of my tank if it helps:

The tempreture is usually around 27 degrees celcius
There are quite a lot of places in the tank for the fish to hide
I clean out around 40% of the tank every week or so. (allthough I have been advised by my girlfriends mum that she only cleans her tank once every 2 or 3 weeks and she has had lots of babies!!)

In my tank there are 2 mollies, 4 baby mollies that my girlfriends mum gave me, 6 empire tetras, 6 of the normal tetras, 2 catfish and 2 orange fish. (Not sure what they are as my girlfriend bought them).

Not sure what to do, I really want my Mollies to breed. Any advice?

Thanks.

Andrew.

Having only 2 mollies, 1 male and 1 female, often makes them less likely to breed. Add another 2 female mollies and I think they will breed abundantly. If there is only 2, the male will harass the female, often to death. Either she will not allow him to mate with her or if he does manage to mate her she will abort the lot through stress. Your female will really appreciate you adding another 2 females to take a bit of the strain off her. With all live bearers, a ratio of 3 females to every male is advised.

Thanks for your advice.

I would get another female molly or two, but the thing is... in my tank I have 1 male and 1 female molly and then I have 4 baby mollies that I took on from someone elses tank.

Maybe some of the baby mollies will be female... I hope so anyway lol!

Even with an increased number of females, with that mixture of fish, the fry are likely already being born, just being eaten before you get to see them. If you really want fry, try moving the pregnant female to a tank of her own, at least 10 gallons, with lots of plants, especially floating plants. Give her some time and keep watch... then when you get fry, move mom back to the main tank and raise the fry seperately. There isn't a fish in your tank that won't eat the fry if given a chance, and that's actually a lot of fish to breed anything in the tank even regardless of size. How big of a tank is this?
Hope this helps.
