When do Red tail Plattys give birth?

Hello and good evening. New to the site and I need help with my pregnant fish (s). I have been told by 2 fish stores here in town that "she will have them when she is ready". I don't want the poor thing to kill herself not having these things. The 2nd female is growing is size. It has been 5 weeks of "fat belly". She poops a lot so I don't think she is constipated.... HELP! When do they give birth and is there anything I can do? Lots of plants and fun stuff to hide in.....

she will give birth when Little fish begin popping out! It,s good that you have places for them to hide. Crushed flake food will be eaten by the babies so long as it is crushed fine. Don,t overfeed.

Plants and places to hide (along with clean water) is the best thing you can do for her. Usually livebearers will give birth after 4 weeks. However, young ones who haven't had many pregnancies before can take much longer. One time I had a guppy who was pregnant for over 2 months!

Just give it time and she will have those fry with no troubles at all. Have fun!!!

Ah, I also forgot to add. You'll know she's really ready when she "squares out". You'll see her belly near her gravid spot point out and if you look at her from behind her body will look squarish. Believe me, you'll know it when you see it. This means she's just about to drop her fry.

OK ! I was getting worried. It has been over 5 weeks, but if they can take longer, patience is one of my few strong points. Thanks for the help!

Platies will typically give birth every 4 to 6 weeks. That means if you got her right after the last drop, it could still be another week. Since each platy tends to be consistent, try recording when this drop starts and when the next one starts and you will know how often to expect this particular platy to deliver a new drop. BTW the platy color only matters to people, the fish don't care and all colors will be about the same.
