Question When do danios breed?

I haven't gotten any eggs or anything from my three danio, but how do I sex them to see if they're compatible? Are they choosy with mates? I just wanted to know in case they DO happen to breed, and then I won't have to freak out when I find the egg and isolate it.

danios are not at all picky about who their mate is and they spawn primarily in the early morning.

females will have rounded bellies and are slightly larger. males will have a golden base with horizontal stripes laid across them. males are more streamlined. make sure you have both, of course. you may want to increase the school to 6 or more. it is possible that you only have males or you only have females, in which case you will be waiting a very long time. i would add three more at least

danios eat their eggs when they spawn; they love them. to get any to survive you need to have large substrate, where the eggs can fall in between it, trapped and out of reach of the parents. marbles or very large gravel work for this....also, having a lot of plants can help. if you can put them into a breeder tank with a sponge filter, in the early morning, using marbles or large substrate, you will have no trouble.

if you have males and females, you can be sure that they are spawning each and every morning. watch them early in the morning and the males will sideswipe the females and look like they are trying to run them off the road, so to speak.

hope that helped

what size tank do you have them in? is it cycled? i should have asked that first.

danios are really easy to breed. if they have good water and space to swim around, they are going to spawn without a doubt. you can give the fry a chance in your own tank by adding a lot of plants and hiding places, but they will make very easy and good snacks for a while.

if you want to try breeding them for real, i would talk to the people at the fish store first and make sure they will take them from you, or you could end up with a whole lot of them fairly quickly. they are not likely to give you much or anything at all for them.

Oh, okay! Thank you. I have three danio in a 2.4 gal tank, and it is thoroughly cycled. Hopefully, everyone's keeping the tank okay - I'm on vacation.

Not sure if a 2.4 gallon tank is a sufficient size to try breeding them. Pretty small for breeding any type of fish..

a 2.4 gallon tank may be ok for them to use for spawning, but i hope that isnt where you keep them all the time. danios really need room to swim around because they are so active. 10 gallon is even considered to be too small by many people. a 20 gallon long would be perfect
